1. The agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and Blue Star S.R.L. (Via Ghega 2, 34132 Trieste, Italy · P.IVA 01395180324), the company that operates Tanuki Deck ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the app you accept them. If you don't accept them, don't use the app.
2. What Tanuki Deck is
Tanuki Deck turns Japanese words you photograph into flashcards — with dictionary readings and meanings, a generated example sentence, illustration and audio — and schedules them for review. It is a study tool, not a certified language course, and no particular learning outcome is promised.
3. Your account
You need an account to keep a deck. You're responsible for keeping your credentials to yourself and for what happens under your account. You must be at least 13 (or the higher minimum age your country requires). You can delete your account at any time in Settings; deletion is permanent.
4. Subscription, trial and billing
- Tanuki Deck is a paid subscription with a free trial. Billing is handled entirely by Apple's App Store (or Google Play) under their terms; prices are shown there before you subscribe.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. Cancel any time in your App Store / Google Play subscription settings; cancelling stops the next renewal and keeps access until the paid period ends. Unless the law where you live says otherwise, periods already paid for are not refunded — refund requests go through Apple or Google.
- Each plan includes a monthly allowance of new cards (reviewing the cards you already have is never limited). Unused allowance doesn't roll over. The allowance of each plan is shown in the app and may change; we won't lower the allowance of a plan you're already on mid-period.
- If a trial or subscription lapses, your deck isn't deleted — signing back in restores it.
5. Fair use
The app is for personal study. Don't abuse the card-generation service (bulk-farming cards with scripts, reselling generated content as a dataset, probing or disrupting the service), don't use it for anything unlawful, and don't try to break other users' data out of it. We may suspend accounts that do.
6. Your content
The photos you scan and the deck you build are yours. You give us just the licence we need to operate the service: to process a photo for its words (it is then discarded), and to store and display your cards back to you on your devices. If you set a collector name, you let us show it on cards you were first to capture.
7. Cards, dictionary data and generated content
- Dictionary facts on cards come from JMdict, used under licence from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (CC BY-SA).
- Example sentences, illustrations and audio are generated by AI and can occasionally be wrong or odd. You can rebuild any card in the app. Don't rely on a generated sentence as authoritative — the dictionary facts are the checked part.
- You may export your cards (including to Anki) for your own study and share them as CC BY-SA requires. The app itself, its design and its mascot remain ours — don't copy, resell or rebrand them.
8. Availability and changes
We work to keep the service up, but it depends on third-party providers and is offered without a guarantee of uninterrupted availability. We may change or add features. If we ever discontinue the service, we'll give reasonable notice — and Anki export means your deck can leave with you at any time.
9. Disclaimer and liability
To the extent the law allows, the app is provided "as is" and our liability for indirect damages is excluded, and for direct damages limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability for wilful misconduct or gross negligence, or affects the statutory rights you have as a consumer — including your rights under EU consumer law, which prevail over anything here that conflicts with them.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by Italian law. If you are a consumer in the EU, you also keep the protection of the mandatory rules and the courts of the country you live in. If something goes wrong, write to us first — most problems are solved by email.
11. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before the change takes effect; continuing to use the app after that means you accept the new version. The effective date above tells you which version you're reading.
